The restoration of a car’s coachwork can be carried out either with the body on or removed from the chassis. If the owner chooses to have a body off restoration, the coachwork is placed onto a jig for the duration of the works. Once the existing paint is removed, our team can see exactly what is needed, with any corrosion, accident damage or previous repairs then visible. We also look at the sills, if the car has them, with internal analysis undertaken. If corrosion is present, new sills can be fabricated. The metalwork stage can vary greatly depending on the car’s condition and the life it had led to that point. Once completed, each panel is in perfect order, with all corrosion removed and the shut lines and panel gaps all adjusted and corrected to concours standard. A guide primer is then applied, followed by the shaping stage which, once completed, provides us with arrow sharp panels. A final primer is then applied and blocked down prior to painting. Prior to any paint being applied we go through a consultation process with the owner, reviewing historical documentation to advise on the car’s original colour scheme and materials used. If that’s not to their taste we then look at alternative colours that were also available in the year the car was originally completed, giving them a range of possible period correct colour options.
