1963 Bentley

Chassis No BC88XA which we are currently offering for sale is the fifth of eight cars produced to this design in right hand drive. It was originally completed in February of 1963, finished in Tudor grey over black pearl with a red leather interior. It was sold to Mr Nathan Easterman of Glasgow via the local Bentley agent in Glasgow A & D Fraser Ltd. It was specified with electric windows and an electric aerial. The cars history over the next two decades are unknown, however the livery at some point during this time was changed to the very attractive combination of pine green with a tan leather interior. The history file contains various correspondence from the mid 1980’s onwards, with P&A Wood carrying out various works for the owner at the time, Mr K.J.Riding of Newport Pagnell in 1986. Two years later the car was prepared and then supplied by P.J.Fischer in London to Mr Geoffrey Greenwood. The next change of ownership took place in December 1993 when sold to Mr D W Mustarde of Gloucestershire who retained the car until 2010 when it was sold to Dr James Hull. Chassis No BC88XA was sent to us around a year ago by the present owner to be recommissioned following a long period of time off the road. The car was extensively mechanically reviewed by our workshop team, to ensure reliability, correct performance and pleasurable motoring. It was then cosmetically improved to showroom condition with complete chrome restoration, coachwork restoration and a top-class re-paint, interior improvements and detailing throughout. The completed car now both presents and drives beautifully and is one we are delighted to be offering for sale. It comes complete with tools, chassis cards, history file and invoices covering the works which have taken place in recent times. This lovely car combines beauty, usability, condition and rarity, making it perhaps the ultimate post war Bentley S Type Continental.

Coachbuilders H.J. Mulliner had enjoyed significant success during the 1950’s with their iconic R Type Continental Fastback and subsequent S1 Continental Fastback designs. As the launch of the all-new Bentley S2 Continental chassis and engine drew closer the design team at H.J. Mulliner also looked to the future and began to make some small amendments to their S1 Continentals Fastback design by re-positioning of the front spotlights on to the top of the wing line. They also listened to their customers’ requests for a new two door design which allowed greater luggage capacity in the boot. The result was design number 7500, built in very limited numbers which was fitted with a wraparound rear screen and fins on the front and rear wings. Design number 7500 was arguably improved further for the S2 Continental chassis with the removal of the fins to allow a more graceful line. The result was design number 7514, considered by many including ourselves to be the most attractive of all coachwork designs fitted to the S2 Continental chassis. At the point where the S2 Continental production ceased and the S3 Continental began this design was carried forward on a very limited number of cars, eleven to be exact, built to Design No 2012. Although this was absolutely an H.J.Mulliner design through and through, it was now badged as a “Mulliner/ParkWard” design following the amalgamation of the two companies.
