Chassis No BC62XA is the fourth of just sixty-six examples built-in right-hand drive to Design No 2011 by Mulliner/Park Ward. It was originally completed and delivered to its new owner, Mr G Martineau of London by way of supplier H.R Owen, in January 1963, originally finished in Mist Green with off white leather interior. It was supplied on two further occasions to a Mr J A Davies of Swansea, South Wales in January 1965 and again later that same year to Mr J Benjamin of London. Bentley & Rolls Royce Specialist P.J Fischer acquired Chassis No BC62XA in the early 1980s and supplied to a Mr F Rossi in the latter part of 1983. P.J Fischer maintained the car for Mr Rossi until his retirement in 2002. In more recent times the car was reacquired by Mr Fischer and was used as his everyday Bentley. It was then supplied by Frank Dale & Stepsons in 2015 to a long-standing customer who requested the exterior of the car was restored to concours standard in astral blue along with the chrome being restored and replated at the same time. The car has been thoroughly maintained and improved during his ownership, which is all documented in the car’s history file. It is complete with history folder as mentioned, full tools and handbook. A most recent edition to the car, and a welcome one, is air conditioning, making it an ideal tourer in warm climates. This beautiful example comes prepared and ready for its next owner combining excellent mechanical aspects, a concours condition exterior and a more original but excellent interior.

1962 saw the introduction of the S3 variant of the factory bodied standard steel saloon and at first glance it would appear that the all new S3 was merely an S2 with different headlamps. The introduction of the twin headlamps was clearly the most obvious change, but the differences did not end there. Further changes included the introduction of smaller bumper over riders and the repositioning of the front indicators and side lamps into one single unit on the front wing, resulting in an arguably more attractive appearance. Mechanically speaking the S3 was issued with larger 9:1 compression ratio carburettors, improved power steering to aid smoother movement at parking speed and a Lucas vacuum-advance distributor to aid fuel consumption making it almost identical in mechanical specification to the S3 Continental that was being produced at the same time. Production of the Flying Spur type design was continued onto the S3 Continental chassis and badged as a Mulliner/Park Ward design following the amalgamation of the two companies, although strictly speaking this was always an H.J.Mulliner design.

Frank Dale Comment

An extremely handsome Bentley S3 Continental finished in one of the most attractive colours from the period. It’s a car we have known vicariously for many years and more closely for the past decade, supplying and then restoring it for the present owner. A beautiful example of the last medium sized coachbuilt car from Mulliner/Park Ward and one that we are delighted to be offering for sale again.
